The Calvin cycle is a series of biochemical redox reactions that take place in the stroma of chloroplasts in photosynthetic organisms.

The first phase of the Calvin cycle is known as carbon fixation. During this phase, carbon dioxide (CO2) is incorporated into an organic molecule.

The enzyme ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCO) catalyzes the reaction between CO2 and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP), a 5-carbon sugar, to form a 6-carbon intermediate.

This 6-carbon intermediate is unstable and immediately splits into two molecules of 3-phosphoglycerate (3-PGA), a 3-carbon compound.

This process of incorporating CO2 into an organic molecule is crucial as it forms the basis for the subsequent phases of the Calvin cycle, which involve reduction and regeneration steps.
