Identify the total number of valence electrons in the molecule H2CO3. Hydrogen has 1 valence electron, carbon has 4, and oxygen has 6. Therefore, the total number of valence electrons is 2(1) + 4 + 3(6) = 24.
Determine the central atom, which is usually the least electronegative atom that isn't hydrogen. In this case, carbon is the central atom.
Arrange the atoms with carbon in the center, bonded to three oxygen atoms. Two of these oxygen atoms will also be bonded to hydrogen atoms.
Distribute the remaining valence electrons to satisfy the octet rule for each atom. Start by forming double bonds between carbon and one of the oxygen atoms to satisfy the octet rule for carbon and oxygen.
Place lone pairs on the oxygen atoms to complete their octets. Ensure that the total number of electrons used equals the total number of valence electrons calculated initially.
