Determine the Lewis dot structure for the NH 3 molecule. Alright. So we're gonna say that nitrogen is in group 5 a, so it has 5 valence electrons. There's only one of it, so that's 5 valence electrons for nitrogen. Hydrogen is in group 1 And there are 3 of them within the formula, so that's 3 valence electrons total. When you add that up, that means we're going to have 8 total valence electrons for n h 3. We're going to place the we're supposed to normally place the least electronegative element in the center of the compound, but remember, hydrogen never goes in the center. So we're gonna have to place nitrogen there. We're going to make single bonds to the surrounding elements, which are the hydrogens. Remember, hydrogen only wants 2 valence electrons to be like helium, it doesn't need 8, so we don't put any electrons around the hydrogens. Now each bond has within it 2 valence electrons being used. So we've used 6 out of our 8, meaning we have 2 remaining. Those would go on to nitrogen. So this would be the lewis dot structure for the NH3 molecule.
