Welcome everybody. Here's our next problem. Consider the molecular model shown below, draw its skeletal formula and name the functional groups present in the compound. And we have this molecular ball and stick model drawn here. And we're, we have color coded balls for the different atoms. We're given a key that gray is carbon, white is hydrogen, red, is oxygen and yellow is sulfur. So for the skeletal formula, the skeletal structure, our hydrogens will be implied, they don't get directly drawn on in the structure and the carbons will each be represented by a corner or a vertex of our structure. So we'll start on the left side and we start with the carbon and coming up from the carbon at an angle, we have a yellow ball. So we'll have this will be a silver. Now with sulfur, we do tend to write the hydrogen in there because our car, our hydrogens that are applied are the hydrogens that are on the carbon atoms. Since this is a sulfur atom, we actually do write it in directly there. So I've written HS and then a line going down to that carbon. Now here we see proceeding from our carbon that's found with the sulfur. There are two carbons that have a multiple bond. It's a little hard to see in this diagram, whether it's two or three bonds. But here we need to notice the geometry of this bond. So this is a linear bond, the two carbons are 180 degrees apart. So that means we know this must be a triple bond, double bonds. We'd see the atoms around them arranged in a trigonal planar geometry with them being each 100 20 degrees apart. So we'll draw a straight line this corner here is our carbon. Now, this is a linear geometry. So we don't have a corner. So we just draw our triple bond in sort of in the middle here knowing that we, we're representing two carbons, one on each side. So we have carbon, then carbon triple bond, carbon and then 1/4 carbon, two hydrogens that are implied there. Then we go down knowing that all the bonds, all the single bonds between carbons have a tetrahedral geometry. We have another carbon with two hydrogens that are implied. Now straight through to another carbon which we see has bonds to two oxygens, one of which is clearly a single bond. We go down to write the o there and the other one, it's a little harder to tell. We can see it's a multiple bond, but oxygen and carbon wouldn't have a triple bond. This must be a double bond. So this carbon is double bonded to another oxygen. And we see that does have that expected trigonal planar geometry. Meanwhile, our single bonded oxygen has one more carbon attached to it. So another little extended line there and that's a terminal carbon with three hydrogens that we leave off. So we have our sort of skeletal structure drawn here. I've just scooted my structure a little to the left because it was the last carbon was kind of going off the screen there. Now, we just need to name the functional groups. So let's start on the left side, we have this sh with the sulfur in it. And I've decided to make a box around it in red to make it sort of stand out. This would be a file that format format sh Now our CC triple bond is actually another functional group. So cc triple one in the middle of a molecule, which makes this molecule an alkane. And then finally, we've got our last grouping here. This is all one functional group that involves a carbon with those two oxygens, one with a double bond, one with a single bond, and then a functional group coming off of the second oxygen. And that is an ester. So we could be a little confused because we might think about an aldehyde where there's an oh there. But in Esther, you have another functional group coming off of there. In this case, a methyl group, ch three. So there we have it, we have our formula and we have three functional groups on our molecule. The thi the alky and the ether. See you in the next video.
