Now, first, when it comes to a question like this, where you have to draw a compound, given a name, it's always best to start from the very right side at the par chain and then proceed to add substituents as needed because there are two main pieces of information obtained from the parent name, Tina, wait Hept or Hep tan indicates that my parent chain is going to be seven carbons long. And the suffix A L if you recall is actually a modifier, right? It gives us information as to what functional group is present in the compound. And in this case, the modifier A L indicates that it is an aldehyde. Now, because it's an aldehyde recall that the car bono or the C double bond O that's present in aldehydes. And ketones would be attached to the very end of a carbon chain, right? So the first thing I'm going to do here is draw my seven carbon chain and also number it just to make sure that I have the right amount. OK. So here I have a seven carbon chain. And because the functional group present is an aldehyde, my carbonel or my C double bond O would be present on carbon one at the very end of the parent chain. So carbon one here would have a double bond to oxygen and another bond to hydrogen. So at this point, I can go ahead and attach substituents as necessary. Now, when it comes to an Isobel substituent, it would be very easy to assume that it would simply be a four carbon substituent present on position three of the parent chain. But that is not quite the case, right? Because of this prefix iso. Now recall that substituents that begin with the prefix iso are characterized either Y shape, right? They create a sort of y structure that makes them very distinct. So the phrase Isobel doesn't mean that there is a four carbon chain rather that there are four carbons in total present in the substituent. So the first thing I'll do here is I'll locate carbon three and start by drawing out a three carbon chain and so on my three carbon chain, I'm going to add an additional metal group on the second carbon of the substituent itself, right? Because notice how when I do that I get a Y shape, that is very characteristic of substituents that begin with the prefix iso for example, an isopropyl group and lastly is my final substituent which is a metal group on carbon two. So I would locate carbon two of my parent chain and then simply add a one carbon substituent attached to it and there you have it.
