All right. Hi everyone. So this question is asking us, what is the line structure and condensed formula for the following amine? Is it classified as tertiary secondary or primary? And why? So first, because of the model that's been provided, I actually want to go ahead and discuss the condensed formula before we get into the skeletal formula or line structure. Because notice how in the model provided the black spheres represent carbon atoms, the blue sphere represents nitrogen and the yellowish spheres represent hydrogen. So because we can see each type of atom present according to the model, I want to go ahead and discuss the condensed formula first because recall that the condensed formula of a given compound shows how atoms are connected without necessarily showing these lines that indicate chemical bonds. So in this case, I would go ahead and group together carbon atoms with the hydrogen atoms attached to them. So if I consider the carbon atom that's farthest left in my structure, right, it has one carbon atom connected to three hydrogen atoms. So in my condensed formula, I would write this as CH three. And so the next carbon over has only two hydrogens attached to it. So I would write that as CH two now recall that any substituents other than hydrogen are also written next to their respective carbon. But in parentheses to indicate that that substituent is connecting to the carbon adjacent to it in the condensed structure. So if I consider the rest of the cul chain, the remaining four carbons are all going to be CH twos because each of them have two hydrogen atoms associated to them. So that's a six carbon all kill chain. And by this point, I have encountered my nitrogen atom and nitrogen only has one hydrogen connecting to it. So I would write this as NH and so on the other side of my nitrogen atom specifically, on the right, we have only a one carbon oil chain. So that would be simply CH three. So now that weve talked about the condensed formula, I want to go ahead and tackle the skeletal formula or the line structure because we call it a line structure is a structure in which carbon carbon bonds are represented as lines with every corner or open end representing a carbon atom. Now hydrogen atoms connecting to carbons are not actually drunk. Instead, they are implied to be there to a compensate for however many bonds, carbon is missing. So in this case, right, if we consider the model as well as the condensed formula, I'm going to actually go ahead and start by drawing my nitrogen at. So nitrogen would be shown in a line structure simply because it is not carbon. And in in addition to that any hydrogens connecting to oxygen atoms or nitrogen atoms, any atom except carbon would also be shown. So I would draw my NH here. So on the right side, I have only a one carbon oil chain. So I would draw a line coming from nitrogen and simply stop there right? Because the open end here would indicate that a carbon is present with the appropriate amount of hydrogen. So now on the left side, I would go ahead and draw a six carbon all killed chain. So in this case, from the left side of the nitrogen, I would draw a zigzag line with a total of five corners and one open end indicating that there are six carbons in total on that chain. And so that would actually complete my line structure, right. So just to go ahead and label everything we have or line structure and hour condensed formula. So now lets talk about classification whether or not this compound is primary, secondary or tertiary. Recall that a means can be classified as either primary secondary or tertiary depending on how many carbon atoms are attached to nitrogen or how many groups. So an a mean is considered to be primary if it has only one a kill group attached to nitrogen and therefore only one carbon attached to nitrogen, an amine is secondary if it has two acho groups attached to nitrogen and therefore, two carbon atoms attached to nitrogen. And lastly, it is considered tertiary if it has three acho groups attached two nitrogen and therefore three carbon apps attached to nicer. So if I consider the um being given, right, we can see that two ocho groups are attached to the nitrogen atom directly. So therefore, right, it is a secondary Amin because oops because it is connected to two all kill groups, therefore, two carbon atoms are attached directly to nitrogen and there you have it. So here is our final answer. We have both the line structure oops and our condensed formula. And so we know that the given amine is a secondary amine because it is connected to two all kill groups.
