Hi, everyone. Let's take a look at our next problem. It says sketch the line angle structure of a cyclic compound or a condensed structural formula of the compound below 234 trichlorophenol. And we have four answer choices A through D they're all line angle structures and all of them have benzene rings. So we kind of have a, a jump up on this problem since we already know we have a benzene ring, we have a cyclic compound. So we'll be looking at a line angle structure. We see that all of these have alcohol groups and three chlorine except for one which has two chlorine in different positions. So we'll look at each of these specifically as we work our way through the problem. So when we're getting a structure from a name, we start with what is our base compound. So we have this 234 tri Chloro. So that's going to be the sort of the prefixes and represent the substituents while the phenol will be our base compound. So we need to remember what is a phenol. And we recall that it is a benzene ring with an oh substituent as we see in all of our answer choices specifically that oh substituent is on carbon one. So we don't need to figure out how to number the ring. We always start in the case of phenol with carbon one being the carbon bonded to the oh group. So we'll draw our benzene ring with its double bonds and I'm putting the oh on top, you don't have to put it on top, but it always will be carbon one. So sometimes it's a little easier just to have it on top. So I'm going to go ahead and number. So I have, I have the draw the base compound again in this case, uh oh goes on here even though it's a substituent because in my base name, I know that I have it there, then I number the carbon atoms. And again, in this case with phenol, I know that number one as the oh group. So just go around my ring and number them one through six. And now I just need to locate my substituents. So I'll put locate substituents. So I know that I have three chlorine Adams three cl and they're on carbons 23 and four. So that's pretty straightforward. I'm just going to draw them in red because I have my numbers here in blue in that way, it doesn't get too confusing looking at this. So on carbon two, I have a chlorine on carbon three, I have a chlorine and on carbon four, I have a chlorine. So essentially all of my substituents oh and then CCC are on four adjacent carbons, all sort of in a row. So let's look at our answer choices and decide which one is correct. When we look at choice. A, we have the manze ring oh group on top. And then we have going from that to carbon number one, proceeding to the right. Carbon two has a chlorine. Carbon three has a chlorine, but the third chlorine is on carbon five, not carbon four. So choice A is incorrect. When we look at Choice B, we have a benzene ring O group but right away, we see there's only two chlorine's on it. It has a chlorine oh group on the top. Then a chlorine and carbon two and then two bonds from carbons three and four. So on the correct carbon, but two bonds leading to a single chlorine that isn't even going to happen as chlorine doesn't make two bonds having seven valence electrons. So cross Choice B out in choice C benzene ring oh group on carbon one and then three chlorine in a row, but they're on carbons three, four and five with nothing on carbon two. Sir. Choice C also incorrect. Just by elimination, we're down to choice D let me double check it benzene ring alcohol group and then chlorine on carbons 23 and four. So choice D is indeed our correct line angle structure 4234 trichlorophenol, a benzene ring with an oh group on carbon one and then chlorine's on carbons 23 and four. See you in the next video.
