All right. Hi, everyone. So this question is asking us what is the formula? And Iupac name of the trial, also known as glycerine. So first and foremost, right, recall that Glycerin is the common name of Glycerol. And Glycerol is a three carbon chain with hydroxy or oh groups on all three carbons. So that's a trial. So the formula would be a three carbon chain. Actually let me start with the line structure first, right. The formula would be a three carbon chain with hydroxy groups on all three carbons making it a trial. So I can represent this as a formula in addition to the line structure, right? Because notice how carbons one and three of the chain are connecting to one carbon atom and one oxygen atom. This means that both of them need two hydrogens to make sure that carbon has all four bonds that it needs. Right? So in writing out the parent chain, I can write my hydroxy group next to CH two AC and CH two. Oh, right, because here I'm noting down all three carbons and the number of hydrogens that they would all need to ensure that they have all four bonds. Now carbon two has 10 group as well. So I'm going to go ahead and draw it connected above carbon two in my structure. So that would be my formula. And now we can go ahead and discuss the Iupac name. Now, recall that the Iupac name is the longest carbon chain that also contains our highest priority functional group. So in this case, right, we have a three carbon chain which indicates that the parent name would be propane. But recall that sometimes modifiers are necessary to specify what functional group is added. Now, normally, in the case of an alcohol, in which there is one hydroxy group recalled that modifier would be ol but in a case like this where multiple hydroxy groups are present. For example, a prefix is added in front of the modifier to specify how many there are. So because I have three hydroxy groups, my modifier gets modified to try all. So it's three hydroxy groups in the same compound. So here I would go ahead and number, identify and number any substituents that I have. But in this case, the only substituents present are the hydroxy groups. So no further work is needed for that step. So my last step is to go ahead and put everything together. So in this case, I would place my modifier after my parent name. So that's propane trial, but that is not quite right either, right? Because in addition to Edie modifiers necessary to indicate functional groups. Recall that numbers are necessary to specify their location on the parent chain. So in this case, I have one hydroxy group on all three carbons. So that means that I need to add three different position numbers to specify all of their locations. So I would do so before the modifier of trial. So that would be propane dash one comma two comma three dash trial, right? So just to reiterate one more time, that would be propane dash one comma two comma three dash trial. Notice how I use commas to separate numbers from each other and dashes to separate numbers from letters and there you have it here is the formula of glycerin, otherwise known as propane 123 trial.
