All right. Hi everyone. So this question is asking us to draw the condensed structural formula of two methyl, two hexane thiol. So a few quick things about a condensed structural formula, recalled condensed structural formulas showcase how atoms in a compound are connected without showing any bonds to hydrogen. So in the case of an organic compound, for example, bonds between carbon atoms would be shown, but the hydrogens they are attached to would simply be grouped next to their associated carbon as opposed to drawing lines in between carbon and hydrogen to showcase their bond. So the first step in drawing the condensed structural formula as with line angle formulas is by drawing out the parent chain which is two exane dial. Now recall that the functional group of thol is very similar to that of an alcohol. But instead of having a hydroxy or a wage group, you have an s group attached to it. So it's sulfur connecting to a carbon atom. So for the condensed structural formula, the first thing I'm going to do is draw out six carbon atoms connecting to each other in a straight line. Recall that conventional condensed structural formulas use 90 degree angles for their bonds. So that's what I'm doing here. Oops, just fixing it a little bit. So here are my six carbons and to keep track of everything a little bit better, I'm going to go ahead and number all of my carbons first going from left to right. So the phrase two Hexane thiol indicates that the thiol functional group is on carbon two of the parent chain. So when I locate carbon two, I go ahead and I draw s attached directly to it once again using 90 degree angles for my bots. So then that leaves me with one more substituent in this case, written to the left side of the parrot name as seen here with the phrase two methyl. So in addition to having the f functional group, this compound is going to have one methyl group or ch three attached to carbon two as well. So now that I've added all of the substituents present in this compound, I can focus my attention on adding hydrogen atoms because s discussed previously, the hydrogen atoms attached to a particular carbon are grouped next to the carbon that they are attached to. So for example, because carbon one has only one bond to another atom, I would group three hydrogens next to carbon one because carbon prefers to have four bonds to remain neutral, right. So hydrogen is being added so that every carbon has the appropriate number of bonds that they require which in this case is four. Now, carbon two already has four bonds attached to it. So it would not require any more hydrogens. Carbon three. On the other hand, and carbons four and five each have two other bonds to other atoms. This means that carbons 34 and five will each require two hydrogen atoms and carbon six. On the other hand, has only one bond to another atom. So it requires three more hydrogens as was the case with carbon one and there you have it. So here is the condensed structural formula of two methyl, two hexane, thy showcasing all of the bonds between atoms other than hydrogen.
