Welcome back, everybody. Here's our next question. It says provide the condensed structural formula of 111 Trib bromo, 23 dimethyl butane. So let's recall that a condensed structural formula is one in which lines show bonds and it indicates how atoms are attached to each other. But ch groups are shown as groups of letters. So ch three ch two, the ch bonds are not specifically drawn in with lines, but we have these lines to show where there might be ambiguity about how something's connected. When I'm drawing a structure from a name, it's often simplest to start with a skeletal structure as I get a view of how these are connected to each other because in skeletal structures, the hydrogen atoms are implied. So I'm not dealing with all those hydrogens kind of cluttering things up. So I see my main chain is a butane. So a four carbon chain. So I'm going to draw my 1234 carbon chain and we'll number these carbons, 123 and four to keep track. I have 11 tri bromo. So coming out of carbon two, I have three bromine atoms. So I'll draw three lines coming off of that Carmen with three BR atoms. Now, then I have 23 dimethyl. So I have a methyl group on carbon two. So we'll add that in just a line for methyl group and a methyl group on carbon three. And then carbon four doesn't have any substituent groups. So now I'm going to go ahead and erase my numbering just to clear this out a little bit. Now, I'm going to think about how many hydrogens and hydrogens I have on each carbon. Again, they're implied in a skeletal structure. So we're going to write them in, in red as I think about how many bonds each carbon has and fill in the leftover bonds with hydrogens. Carbon one has a bond to another carbon and it has three brom means it's already got four bonds, no hydrogens. Carbon two has a bond to two other carbons in the chain and the methyl. So it has a single hydrogen. Meanwhile, our carbon in the methyl group, it's a terminal carbon. It has three hydrogen. So I'll put H three there carbon three, same situation as carbon two. It has a single hydrogen and that methyl group has three hydrogens and then carbon four is a terminal hydrogen, terminal carbon, excuse me, with three hydrogens. So now that we've figured out how many hydrogens we have on each carbon, let's write out this condensed structure. Well, I'll start with my first Carmen. It has three BROM means I can either write these in as lines since they're not hydrogens or since I don't really need these lines to figure out how they're attached to the carbon, I could write BR three C with the line at this point. I'll put, or since again, theres no ambiguity there about how the BROM means are attached since this is the carbon on the end. But I'll start again with the structure I drew on first with the three BROM means indicated with lines I have no hydrogen. So I'll just draw a line from my carbon to the next carbon. That's carbon two, it has one hydrogen. So I'm going to go ahead and write hch since our ch groups are shown as groups of letters, it also has a methyl group. So I'll draw a line going up or it could draw it going down either way. And then I'll write C for the methyl group H three for its hydrogens. Now note that because I'm writing this as a group, it doesn't indicate the bonds of those hydrogens because I'm going to draw another line coming out from my ch and that hydrogen is not actually bonded to another carbon, but that group just tells me this is many hydrogens are associated with this car with this particular carbon. Now, I'm on to carbon three. I draw C it has another methyl group I can fit it. So I'll draw it with a line going up, but I could also draw it with a line going down to make more space there. If it were a bulkier group, it has a single hydrogen. So I write CH and finally, carbon number four, terminal carbon. So I write CH three. So I have my structural formula here I have. If I read order from left to right, I have BRC with two BRS on top and bottom, then ch with ACH three branch ch with ACH three branch CH three. So there's my condensed structural formula 4111 di tri bromo. Excuse me. 23 dimethyl Butane butane. See you in the next video.
