Hi, everybody. Let's look at our next question. What is the Iupac name for the given compound? And we have a molecule here with a benzene ring depicted as a hexagon with a circle. We can draw it that way indicating the de localization of the electrons with bromine chlorine and O substituents. We'll go into a little more detail as we figure out our name. Our answer choices are a four bromo, two chlorphen B, two Chloro four broze alcohol C bromo, Chloro Anelle D for bromo seven Chloro toine. So let's dive into this. The first job when we have an aromatic ring like this is figuring out what is the base compound. So we have a benzene ring but certain functional groups attached give it a specific name. So in this case, we have an alcohol group. So that means our base compound is a phenol. When it comes to numbering our carbons. When we have something like a phenol, an a line or a toluene, then see one equals the carbon with the oh group. So we know this will be carbon one and now we'll think about our other substituents and the numbering order here So we have two other substituents. We have a chlorine and a Bromine. We want to number the ring so that our substituents have the lowest possible number. So if we start going around in a clockwise fashion, we would go around one, starting with the oh group 234 before we get to Bromine. But if we go in a counterclockwise direction, we go 12 to get to chlorine. So that is the direction we want to go for the lowest possible substituent number. So I'll go around and number these carbons counter clockwise, 23456. And as we said, our chlorine is on C two carbon two, then we keep going and we see that the Bromine is on C four. So we have the locations for our other substituents substituents and we remember that we want to put them in alphabetical order. So abc order disregarding any numerical prefixes like by try et cetera. In this case, we only have one of each. So we don't need to worry about that. So that means we would start with BROMO since that comes first in the alphabet roaming and carbon four. So we would have four hyphen bromo using hyphens to separate numbers and names commas to separate numbers. We have four bromo and then our chlorine is on carbon two. So we'd have another hyphen two, Chloro and then without any spaces that goes right into our base compound knee, which is phenol. So we don't need to specifically indicate the hydroxy group because it's right there in the name phenol, which means a benzene ring with an alcohol group attached. So our IUPAC name is four bromo, two chlorophyll and that is choice A to be thorough. Let's look at our other answer. Choices to understand why they are not correct. Choice B says two chloro four bromo, benzene alcohol. But again, we wouldn't say benzene alcohol. We use the name Phenol and our Chloro and bromo are in the wrong order. So choice B definitely incorrect. Choice, DS choice C excuse me says bromo Chloral Ana line, but an ana line as a base compound means a benzene with an NH two group attached, not an alcohol group. So that's definitely incorrect. And choice D four bromo seven chloro tomine. Again, we have the wrong base compound name. That would be a benzene with a methyl group attached to CH three. So definitely incorrect. So once again, the correct Iupac name for the compound we're given is choice A four bromo two chloral. See you in the next video.
