All right. Hi everyone. So this question says to determine the type of reaction or each of the reactions displayed below. And here on the screen are two such reactions which we will describe in greater detail as we proceed through this video. Option A says that one is substitution to his rearrangement. Option B says one is elimination to his addition. Option C says one is substitution, two is addition and option D says one is elimination. Two is rearrangement. Now, before we examine the two reactions provided in greater detail, I just want to go ahead and review some of this terminology that we can see in the answer choices because I want to review what types of reactions there are listed in this question, right? We have addition reactions, we have elimination, we have substitution and we also have rearrangement. Now, the nice thing about them is that their name helps us understand what process is occurring with them, right? When we talk about addition reactions, then two separate compounds, right? Two separate reagents add together to form a single product, right? So in an addition reaction, generally speaking, if you start off with two different products or not products, reagents, sorry about that. But if you start off with two different reagents, then they combine together to form one larger product. Whereas elimination reactions are sort of an opposite process, right? Because India animation elimination reaction, sorry about that. But in this case, one reactant split into smaller products. Now, generally speaking in an elimination process, then some functional group present in a molecule is eliminated or removed to form its own free product, right? So in the case of elimination, if we take one reagent, then it's going to split into two or more products, right? Because functional groups within the starting material separate into their own by-product. Whereas substitution on the other hand is an exchange, right, in a substitution reaction, one functional group present in a molecule is replaced with another. So there's an exchange right? There's a swap, so to speak. Whereas a rearrangement reaction is a reaction in which the connections between atoms in a molecule are rearranged, right? They are modified in some way. So a rearrangement reaction is going to produce an isomer of the starting material because the number of atoms is not going to change necessarily, but the connections between them are going to change. So it's a different structure overall. So with that being said, we can go ahead and proceed with analyzing the two reactions provided here, right. So in reaction one, we have an ocho fluoride reacting with sodium chloride to produce an alko chloride and sodium fluoride. Now, what I want to point out here is that fluorine and chlorine are attached to the same carbon in the organic structure. So what this implies is that fluorine and chlorine simply switched positions, right, the chloride ion and sodium chloride replaced fluorine in this molecule leaving fluoride ion as a product. So our first reaction is going to be substitution. Whereas in our second product, we have two moles of a ketone reacting to create a product that appears to be larger, right? Because if I consider the number of carbons in the starting material, there are only four carbons. Whereas in my product, I have eight carpets. So I have two moles of a four carbon compound combining to create a larger or one larger eight carbon compound, right? So this is an addition reaction, right? Because these two moles of our ketone here combined together to create one larger product and there you have it right. So if I consider my answer choices here, my answer is going to be option c in the multiple choice because reaction one is substitution and reaction two is addition.
