Welcome everybody. Let's look at our next question. It says, what is the Iupac name for the structure below? And we'll walk through this in a little more detail, but we have a carbon chain with an oh group and we have a chlorine on an adjacent carbon and on a carbon adjacent to that, we have a chlorine and a bromine. Our answer choices are a 33, Chloro bromo, two chloro one fentaNYL B 233, bromo Chopin C three, bromo, 23, Di Chloro one, Piny or D bromo Diop Penol. Well, even before I go any further, I can eliminate choice D bromo Diop Penol with this many substituents, we absolutely need numbers to locate our substituents. All of our enter choices have a base alcohol, entin all we've got five carbons. You can't get the structure from this name if you don't have number locators for the substituents, so we can cross that one off right away and we can also cross off choice B which is 233 bromo chop Pinol. It doesn't specify which atom is on which carbon. So that is not going to be the name. It doesn't tell us what we need to know. So we're down to A and C. So let's think this through. So we have a, we already know we have Piny because we have multiple choice question, all the answers have Piny. But since this is a practice question, let's walk through it in the steps as if we didn't have the answer choices. So our first step will be to identify the longest carbon chain. So I'll use blue highlighting for those carbons in that chain. So I'm going to start on the left side, just going left to right. We'll figure out which order is best to number it in, in the next step. But I'll start on the left and can trace 12345 carbons in a continuous line. So uh my carbon chain will be five carbons. So that will be a pen ta and we see I have these halogens and then I have an oh group since I have an oh group, this is an alcohol. So I use that pentane root and add ol. So we have pinol as we expected. So then we need to identify where that alcohol group is. If we only have one or two carbons, we don't need a number. But here we have three or more, we have five. So we need to identify with a number. So we'll number the carbons. So number C atoms. So that, that oh group has the lowest possible number since the alcohol group is sort of our most prominent or most important group. We lower number it that way it's attached to a terminal carbon. So that automatically is carbon one. So we start labeling left to right with that carbon one having the oh group. So I'll go through and number my five carbons. So we know we'll have a one hyphen fentaNYL, separate the number and name with a hyphen and then we need two and step three, locate the substituents and name them. So moving along, we see we have two chlorine. So that will be Di Chloro since there are two of them and they are on carbons, two and three. So I have two comma three using a comma to separate numbers hyphen di Chloro to label those. And then I have a bromine on carbon three. So that will be three hyphen Bromo to decide what order to put these in. I'm going to put them in alphabetical order. So I wrote ABC order don't include the numerical suffixes. So I don't include that dye in deciding that order because that's a not suffix, excuse me, prefixes. Since that's a numerical prefix, I look at Chloro versus Bromo and bromo will come first. So to put them in order I have three hyphen bromo and then another hyphen, then my two comma three Di Chloro and then last of all my base name hyphen one hyphen pol. And when I look at my answer choices, I see that matches choice C when I look at the last remaining choice, choice A says 33, Chloro bromo, two Chloro one Pinol. So you could gather from this name where the substituents are, but they're not named properly in the proper order. You would put the two chloral together as this 23 Di Chloro and the bromine separately. So you have each individual substituent named out in groups. So that's why to a is incorrect.
