Hi, everybody. Welcome back. Our next question says, identify the correct statement regarding chromatid and chromosomes. And we have four statements here and rather than read them all aloud and then go through them one by one that's rather repetitive. So instead we'll just read each 11 at a time and then assess whether it's correct or not choice. A says a chromosome is a copy of a chromatid that is still joined to the original at the centromere. Well, when we think about chromosomes, it can get a little confusing because if you just did sort of free association with the word chromosome, I said, you know, think of a chromosome, you'd probably think of that typical X shape with the little centromere in the middle. But we have to remember that this particular form of a chromosome, remember that chromosomes can be in different forms, they can be dispersed as chromatin within the nucleus when the cell isn't replicating condensed as chromosomes um in either this form or just as one leg of the X. So when we see this X form, we have to remember that each of these legs of the X is actually a sister chromatid, these two sister chromatid are identical and they're the result of the cell getting ready to replicate and divide. So the chromosome, this single line that I've drawn the right replicates itself and then the copy of it remains joined to it by the centromere. So in choice, a, the thing that's a copy is the chromatid. So these are reversed, it should say a chromatid is a copy of a chromosome that is still joined to the original at the centromere. So choice A is an incorrect statement. It's to reverse the two things. So let's move on to choice. B A chromatid is one of two identical halves of a replicated chromosome joined together by a centromere. Well, based on what we were just talking through, you can see that this is our correct statement. The chromatid are identical to each other. So it's two identical halves of our X shaped chromosome. The chromosome has been replicated to prepare for um for that process of mitosis and they're joined together by the centromere. So we have our answer. But to be thorough, let's look at our other two choices. Joy says chromatid are long DNA molecules with part or all of the genetic material of an organism. Well, this one you could maybe technically quibble with, since the chromatid is part of the chromosome, it is, you know, part of this long DNA molecule. But if you were just, you know, pulling out the definition of one of these because chromatid refers to a very specific circumstance, a specific part of a chromosome under specific circumstances, it's been replicated, it's ready for mitosis. This doesn't really work. And it's definitely not. It's a worse answer than choice. B basically, if you want to pull up the definition long DNA molecule of part or all of the genetic material, the term you're going to be defining is chromosomes. Uh It's as part or all because some organisms have just one chromosome. In which case that chromosome would have all their genetic material. Whereas many organisms have multiple chromosomes and will only have part. So, you know, again, a little bit, you know, kind of a, you could, again, you could argue with it a little bit but definitely not as definite an incorrect answer as choice. B trustee says chromosomes generally consist of either three or four separate individual chromatin. Well, this is incorrect when chromosomes have been replicated. As we saw, they consist of two and not really separate individual chromatid. It would be joined individual chromosomes or individual chromatid, excuse me. And that would only be during mitosis at other times in the cell cycle. They do not consist of these individual chromatid. So something to keep in mind but incorrect answer. So, cross that out. And once again, our correct statement regarding chromatid and chromosomes is choice B A chromatid is one of two identical halves of a replicated chromosome joined together by a centromere.
