Option A says two metal five chloral in all, option B says four chloro two hydroxy tone. Option C says five chloro two methyl phenol and option D says methyl choral benzene. So in this case, our primary functional group is going to be an alcohol because recall that the hydroxy group present in this compound takes priority over the chlorine atom and the methyl substituent. So when naming alcohols using the Iupac system, the first step would be to identify the parent chain. Recall that the parent chain in this case refers to the longest continuous chain of carbon atoms that also contains the hydroxy group. But there is a special circumstance when it comes to aromatic compound because in this case, we happen to have a benzene ring with a hydroxy group attached directly to it. So this actually takes care of the first step because when we have a benzene ring attached to a hydroxy group that is referred to as phenol. So the name of the parent chain, so to speak is pal. Now because our parent chain, so to speak, is phenol. Then for the purposes of numbering the carbon atom on the benzene ring that contains the hydroxy group is automatically going to be carbon one. So the numbering of the rest of the compound depends entirely on which direction has a substituent closer to position one. And considering that the methyl group is directly adjacent to carbon one, I would number the rest of my ring so that the methyl group is on position two. So that ends up being counterclockwise. So with this in mind, I can go ahead and proceed with my substituents. Now, in this case, I have to address the substituents that are not the hydroxy group because I've already addressed the presence of the hydroxy group by naming this compound phenol. So my remaining substituents are the chlorine atom and a methyl group or ACH three. Recall it as a substituent when I'm naming a halogen like chlorine. In the Iupac name, the suffix I and E is dropped entirely and replaced with O. So I go from chlorine to Chloro. And so my other substituent, the methyl group is simply referred to as methyl in the Iupac Nate. But there is an additional piece of information that we are missing because recalled for every single substituent present, there has to be a position number to indicate where on the molecule it is. Now, there is a bit of an exception here because of the hydroxy group. But when it comes to derivatives of phenol, the hydroxy group is automatically assumed to have the position number of one. So there is no need to write it per se. But for the remaining substituents, the number is needed. So the methyl group is on carbon too. That's two dash metal and the chlorine atom is on carbon five making it five dash chloral. Notice how I'm separating numbers from letters using a dash in between them.
