And we have a condensed structural formula given to us that's CH three with a single bond to CH two, single bond to C triple bond to C single bond to CH two, single bond to C. And that C has three CH three groups attached to it. And then we have four different answer choices. A 66 dimethyl three hept B 22 dimethyl four hep time C 22 metal for hexane or D 66 methyl three hex. So when we're naming something like this, our most important feature in our naming system is our triple bond. So we have an alky, our ending is going to be Y and E which all our answer choices have. So our first job is to find out the longest carbon chain, how many carbons are in it. So we find the longest carbon chain, it will obviously be the chain with the triple bond in it. And we want to number it the number of the chain. So the triple bond has the lowest possible number. So first, let's look how many carbons do we have in the longest possible chain? So I'll start left to right. We can see if we need to do that differently. Um One of the reasons I'm doing that is I have these three methyl branches at the end, I often want to end up in my branches. But again, here, the triple bond will dominate everything and determine where we want to start our triple bonds sort of in the middle. I'm starting on the left one and highlighting in blue, 123456. Now I have three methyl groups, I can go into any one of them. So I'm just going to go straight ahead. Seven. That's simpler. If either of my other substituents were a longer carbon chain like an ethyl, I'd want to make a turn on my structure for last of a better word to get the longest possible chain. But in this case, they all just have one carbon. So I have seven carins. So I'll put seven C. So my prefix there to indicate seven is hept. And again, I know I have the ending Iyne to indicate the triple bond. Now, I just need to locate that triple bond. So I have a chain, I can start numbering from either end. Again, I want the numbering so that the triple bond has the lowest possible number. So if we start from the left, I'll number in blue my carbons 123, my triple bond occurs on carbon three from 3 to 4. What happens if I number from the other end of the chain, I'll do that with red numbers. So, starting from the right 1234 that puts my triple bond on carbon four. So the left to right numbering on the structure is the preferred numbering. All race those red numbers. And now we'll just keep going so we can locate our metal substituents. But first before I do that, I'll put a three in front of my Hep dime. Since I've located my triple bond, I might take a pause here. If I'm on a test, perhaps I can already eliminate some choices just by indicating my triple bond and my number of carbons. And indeed, when I look at my answer choices, choice A says three have time. Choice B says four have time. So this is a result of numbering the carbons the wrong way. So choice B is incorrect. Now, let's take a look at CND. They both have hex sign rather than hep. So I've already eliminated three answer choices. I'm left with choice A. So if time were of the essence on a test at this point, I'm done. Pick Choice A and move on. But we're going to be thorough, going to be thorough here with our practice problem and keep going. So we've labeled our base chain. We just need to label and locate our substituents. So we finish our numbering. We stopped at carbon three with our triple bond. So carbon four is the second carbon in the triple bond and carbon five. Now, we're at carbon number six, which has two methyl substituents. So with two meals, we should have dye methyl and they're both located on carbon six. So we'll put a hyphen in front of dimethyl and then we have six comma six hyphen dimethyl. Remember that comma separate numbers, hyphen, separate numbers and names. So after our 66 dimethyl, then we have hyphen three hyphen hep. So that indeed matches choice.
