Option B says three B promo for Ethel Hept, option C says four ethyl, five bromo hept and option D says three bromo four prop hexing. So lets go ahead and get started. Recall that when it comes to determining an Iupac name, your first step should always be to determine the name of the parent chain. Now, the parent chain is the longest continuous chain of carbon atoms present in the molecule given. Now sometimes you might have to try multiple different possibilities to see which gives you the longest chain. Because if we examine the structure provided, it would be very easy to assume that the parent chain is the six carbon chain that goes across the structure given. But that is not actually the longest possible change. Because if I consider the chain of carbons towards the bottom of the structure, I actually get a seven carbon chain, which of course is longer than a six carbon chain. So therefore, my parent chain would be seven carbon atoms long which if you recall would correspond to the name Hept. So because of this, I can actually go ahead and eliminate options A and D because both propose a parent chain of hexane or six carbons. So at this point, my second step would be to identify what substituents are present in the molecule itself. But before I do this, I want to draw attention to the way in which I numbered my parent change. The reason why I decided to number my carbons from left to right is because I want to make sure that substituents have the smallest numerical values possible. So because I have one substituent closer to the left side, I would start numbering from left to right. But with this in mind, we can go ahead and examine what substituents are present that are branching off of the para chain. Now, in this case, I did happen to circle one, right, which is an atom of bromine, but I do have another substituent, right? Because notice how I also have a two carbon substituent branching off of my parent chain. Now recall that a two carbon substituent would be referred to as an ethyl group stemming from the name Ethane. Whereas in this case, our other substituent happened to be a halogen specifically brome. Now recall it when naming halogens as substituents, the suffix I and E is dropped completely and replaced with the letter O. So I go from Bromine to a bromo substituent So my next step is to go ahead and add numbers to specify their positions on the parent chain. Recall that a name an Iupac name must have a position number for every substituent found. So because I have two substituents in total, I would have to have two position numbers in my Iupac name. Now, when multiple identical substituents are present a prefix like dye dry tetra, et cetera would be necessary. But in this case, we happen to have only one of each substituents. So we don't need to apply those rules. So according to my numbering of the parent chain, right, Bromine or my Bromo substituent is attached to carbon three of the parent chain. This means that the position number three goes before the name Bromo and I would place a dash in between them to separate numbers from letters. Now, the EO group is attached to carbon four, which means that the number four would go before the name Ethel with a dash in between. So now my last step is to go ahead and put everything together. Substituents are placed before the parent name with their position number in alphabetical order. Now, the alphabetical order is based on the name of the substituent and not any prefix added to determine how many there are in the molecule. So here the B in bromo would go before the E in Ethel. So that would be three dash promo dash four dash Fo Heptane where all of this is one word with no spaces in between. But notice how throughout everything I'm using dashes to separate numbers from letters. Now commas would be used if I had to separate numbers from each other. But in this case, my iupac name is complete and I get three bromo for Ethel Heptane, which means my correct answer would be option B in the multiple choice and there you have it.
