Hi, everybody. Welcome back. Let's look at our next problem. It says match the following digestive organs in column A with their corresponding gastrointestinal tract activity in column B. So I'm going to read out the organs in column A. So we have them in our mind and then we'll work through the functions in column B, matching them to those organs. So, Colome is oropharynx, mouth, stomach small intestine anus. So let's work our way through column B. Our first function is ingestion. So which organ is responsible for initially ingesting food? And that would be the mouth. So ill, right mouth here and extra. And we'll cross that off our list. So we know we've used that already because one thing to note in these matching questions is, do you have a matching number of items in both columns? So we count in column A 12345 and in column B 12345. So you want to know whether you're gonna expect it to match them all up or are you going to have leftovers? So, our next function is defecation. That final process for any solid waste is ejected from the body and that would of course be done by the anus. So we'll write that there and cross that term off. Our next function is segmentation. So let's recall what segmentation is. Segmentation is a specific muscle movement that involves the concentric muscles. Well, the concentric muscles of what concentric muscles of the small intestine, right, small intestine and cross that up. But down in the lower part here, I'm just going to continue my definition in case we've forgotten what that is. Segmentation is when the concentric muscles in the small intestine contract to mix the contents of the small ingestion intestine in that particular segment. And that's as opposed to perhaps the more famous for lack of a better word kind of contraction that occurs in the small intestine. So versus peristalsis. So, peristalsis is often what we think of because that's the muscle movements that move food through the intestine. So these are rhythmic contractions of the longitudinal muscles. So again, if we imagine segmentation, concentric muscles around a specific segment, contracting and squeezing and mixing versus peristalsis, those longitudinal muscles along the length of the small intestine, having this sort of rhythmical contraction moving along them that causes food to move through the small intestine. That can be just a little bit tricky to keep straight, but we know it occurs in the small intestine. So we've matched that our next function is churning. Well, we might get a little confused since we know there is squeezing, muscle contraction in the small intestine. We think of churning, we think of both that mechanical squeezing and breaking down and also mixing and that would happen within the stomach. So we have muscle contractions that are smooshing and breaking down and contracting and then also mixing in the gastric juices. So beginning that really major part of the breakdown process cross off stomach left with only one choice oral pharynx and that does match with swallowing the oropharynx. Is that part of the throat between the soft palate and the hyoid bone. So that is the region where we swallow. And so that's our correct match there. So we've matched all of our organs and again in column B ingestion with mouth defecation with anus.
