The Southern blot got its name from an actual person, a biologist Edwin Southern. So it's properly capitalized as a proper noun. Northern and western blots were named just an analogy to the fact that Edwin Southern's name was Southern. So properly, they get lower case N and lower case S excuse me, lower case N and lower case W in their name. Although you'll often see them all capitalized in this case, this problem kind of cheats because they're the first letter in the sentence. So they're capitalized anyway, but just an interesting little note Southern is the only one it is named after a person. The others were just kind of a, a joke, I guess, biologist joke. So let's think about our blots, Southern, northern and Western. And we'll recall that the Southern B block analyzes DNA and it uses DNA probes, labeled DNA probes to look for DNA segments of interest. So you find to use a probe that's complementary to the segment you're looking for in a northern blot, you are analyzing R N A and it uses labeled C DNA probes. So complementary sequence to the R N A segment you're looking for. And in the western plot you're looking for or you're looking at protein samples and it uses labeled antibody probes. So you use an antibody which will specifically bind to the protein of interest in your sample. In each case, you run a gel to separate your sample into molecules of different sizes and then use your probe to grab onto the specific target of interest. So with that in mind, let's look through our answer choices to find the incorrect segment. So for choice A, it says we have northern blotting analyzing R N A which is true. That's correct. And therefore choice A is not our answer. Choice. B has southern blotting analyzing DNA, which is also true. So we can cross out choice. B Joyce has Western blotting analyzing DNA and R N A. Well, there we go. There's our incorrect statement because Western blotting analyzes proteins. And finally, we've got choice D which says Western blotting is a routine technique for analyzing proteins. And that as we said is true. So just cross out choice D there.
