Hello everyone in this video we're going to be looking at this practice problem where we want to perform the subtraction negative 13.42 -4.12. So in this case we're gonna be subtracting 4.12 from an already negative number. So that means that I'm going to really be adding these two numbers together. But then when I add I need to make sure to include a negative sign in my answer and notice that it's still a negative number and I need to add these two because I have let's say you have a number line and this line here is negative 13.42. Well if I'm subtracting more from negative 13 that means that I need to go to the left and if I go to the left of a negative number there's only more negative numbers. So there's no way that this equation could turn positive and notice that by subtracting from an already negative number, I'm only increasing the magnitude from which it is away from zero because I'm going further left from zero. So that's why we're changing this to addition and making sure that our final answer has a negative and if we do this you can see that I have two plus two or 44 plus one is five. The decimal point is right there then I have three plus four is seven and finally the one. So my final answer for when I subtract these two numbers I get negative 17.54 and you can see that that aligns with answer choice a So hopefully this video helped and see you next time.
