And now that I've gotten rid of the parentheses you can see that we have a mix of real numbers like the 18 and the 21 And imaginary numbers like the -11 i. and the -17. I. So in order to simplify this expression, I want to combine my real components and my imaginary components. So if I combine my real components, I have 18 plus 21 Which is equal to 39. And if I combine my imaginary components, I have negative 11 I -17 I which is -28. I and because I want to express my answer in standard form recall that standard form has the real components first followed by the imaginary components A plus B. I. And if I look at my answer 39 -28, I you can see that the imaginary components are lost and the real components first.
